Hi Barnes Main,
Welcome to Microsoft Answers.
• Who is the manufacturer of the optical mouse?
It’s not necessary to turn OFF the firewall. However you may check if that make any difference. To Turn on or off the windows Live one care firewall do the following:
i. Open OneCare.
ii. Under Quick links, click Change settings.
iii. On the Firewall tab, select one of the following settings:
• On (recommended): Use this setting if you use your home or personal network and you want to enable an easy connection to other printers, other computers, or other devices.
• Off: We recommend that you do not use this setting. Turning off the firewall can put your computer at risk. If you must use this setting, select the time period that you want the firewall turned off from the drop-down menu.
iv. Click OK.
Check the link “How to configure OneCare firewall” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943787
Remove and reinstall the mouse drivers
1. Click start->Type in device manager in the search bar and hit enter.
2. In Device Manager, locate the device, right click on it and uninstall.
3. Restart the computer.
4. Let Windows vista detect the drivers by itself and install. If that does not help, install the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

Resynchronize your device with the receiver
To resynchronize the mouse with the receiver, follow these steps.
Note When you synchronize the mouse with the receiver, put the device near the receiver and put any other wireless keyboards and mouse at least 6 feet away.
i. Press the button on the receiver, and then verify that the light on the receiver starts to blink.
Note Some newer Microsoft devices are permanently bound to their receiver and cannot be reset.
ii. If a dialog box appears on the screen in several seconds, follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Otherwise, go to the next step.
iii. Press and release the Connect Channel button on the bottom of the mouse.
iv. Check the green light on the receiver. A steady green light means the synchronization was successful. If the problem persists, try steps i through iv again.
v. For the Wireless Notebook mouse: This issue can occur if the micro-switch on the bottom of the mouse is not released. Use a pin or a pen to try to release the button if it is depressed.
